Wild Card, Gianluca Vincentini, Lilian Baylis Studio
Sadler’s Wells lays on a bespoke evening of works curated by the Italian choreographer Gianluca Vincentini in its annual Wild Card programme
Wild Card opens the Lilian Baylis stage at Sadler's Wells to adventurous dance makers, inviting them to devise their own programmes of must-see dance.
Gianluca Vincentini has seized this unique opportunity to select, organise and present the dance that is currently exciting him most. For starters, he will showcase works from three of the most promising choreographers based in the North of England.
This carefully-chosen trio comprises: New Adventures Choreographer Award winner Jamaal Burkmar; UK Critics’ Circle National Dance Award nominee Carlos Pons Guerra; and Leeds-based contemporary dancer and choreographer Crystal Zillwood.
Burkmar takes memories of home and family as the starting point for his physical and feel-good group work, The Calm. Originally commissioned by New Adventures as part of the company’s Choreographer Award Showcase, this abstract piece is rooted in neo-soul music and movement.
Pons Guerra’s O Maria: A Divine Comedy of Ham and Bondage is a flamenco-infused contemporary dance drama, set in a stifling kitchen in 1950s Seville. A heavenly visitor unleashes a torrent of unquenchable passions for an oddly paired couple: a religious woman with a feeding fetish and a gay man trapped in a straight marriage.

Zillwood presents Evolutio, an articulate and thoughtful solo. This deceptively-simple piece investigates evolution, drawing on physical inspiration from primates and the development of life.
As you can never have enough up-and-coming terpsichorean talent, Vincentini will also introduce London dance fans to his company, Möbius Dance. Founded by Vincentini in 2016, Möbius Dance was born out of his desire to nurture emerging contemporary dance artists, supporting them creatively and practically.
Möbius Dance presents a structured improvisation entitled Encounter One, featuring musician Otis Jones, artist Ben Skinner and dancers Stefania Pinato and Amarnah Amuludun. This duet explores the relationship between our everyday life and our creativity.
