Transitions Dance Company is the MA graduate outfit of the Trinity Laban dance school. Founded in 1982 by Bonnie Bird, an original member of the Martha Graham Company, it was the first troupe to combine a student training course with a professional touring experience. This pioneering approach has since been adopted by the likes of Central School of Ballet and London Contemporary Dance School.

This year, Transitions Dance Company is marking its 35th anniversary with an intriguing trio of freshly-commissioned contemporary dance pieces.

British choreographer Charles Linehan’s Nothing But Time emerged from his research into drone technology and provides a bird’s-eye view of dance-making. The dancers move with a precision and absorption that suggests they are simultaneously bound by, and unaware of, time passing. Are we witnessing the dancers’ elegant activity with their permission, or are they oblivious to our possibly intrusive gaze?

Kintsugi is a Japanese art involving repairing broken pottery with gold – highlighting the cracks rather than disguising them. Inspired by this, Israeli choreographer Oded Ronen has devised his Kintsugi. Caught up in solos, partnerships and group formations, the dancers inhabit a broken, lonely and fragmented world. Can they reconnect to build the community they crave?

Cristian Duarte breaks free from traditional performance conventions in his work – simply entitled &. The Brazilian dance-maker investigates what happens when performers join the audience. His humorous movement exploration is set to an arrhythmic electronic score by composer Tom Monteiro.

The 12 dancers of Transitions Dance Company certainly boast a strong group ancestry: alumni include Sir Matthew Bourne (New Adventures), Luca Silvestrini (Protein) and Emma Gladstone (Artistic Director, Dance Umbrella).

We recommend seizing this opportunity to see the contemporary dance talent of the future – who knows where their careers will take them...
