Sadler's Wells Breakin' Convention Preview

After celebrating its 15th anniversary last year, Breakin’ Convention returns Sadler's Wells in 2019 to give curious audiences another opportunity to experience the hip hop way of life.

This extremely popular festival transforms the London dance venue for the entire May Bank Holiday weekend, and showcases the very best of international hip hop talent.

Hosted and curated by Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Jonzi D, Breakin’ Convention is the award-winning and critically acclaimed driving force behind a hip hop dance theatre revolution. By providing a platform for companies from around the world and around the corner, it demonstrates the ever-growing global popularity of street style.

Breakin’ Convention 2019 opens on the Friday with WorX, an adult-only hip hop cabaret evening held in the Lilian Baylis Studio. WorX promises to be an exciting evening of live entertainment encompassing dance, circus and poetry – all with a hip hop flavour.

The festival continues on Satuday and Sunday with a packed programme suitable for the whole family.

Established and upcoming artists journey to Sadler’s Wells to share their electrifying breakin’, innovative popping, creative krump and soulful house dance moves.

The Breakin’ Convention 2019 line-up includes the German dancer-contortionist Rauf Yasit, aka RubberLegz, most recently seen on the Sadler’s Wells stage in A Quiet Evening of Dance by William Forsythe. RubberLegz is set to perform a duet with co-choreographer James Gregg that stretches the possibilities of what the human body can achieve.


Meanwhile, the French break-dancer B-boy Junior will demonstrate his awesome upper body strength and gravity-defying aerial moves when collaborating with the Greek popper Kalliopi Tarasidou.

Among the B-girls is 16-year-old Logan 'Logistx' Edra, a rising star of the Los Angeles dance scene. Logistx is a member of breaking crew The Lab, which won the American television contest World of Dance in 2018.

The stylistic French company Géométrie Variable is also on the bill. This troupe is all about lines, angles and arm motions, with the popping technique of tutting being their go-to movement methodology.

Breakin’ Convention is so much more than a theatre show, as the festival spills out across the Sadler’s Wells building. The space comes alive with DJs, dancers, demonstrations and workshops from 16:00 each day – expect non-stop entertainment this May Bank Holiday!
