London dance audiences can look forward to world premieres of works by Wayne McGregor and Christopher Wheeldon, alongside the first revival of Liam Scarlett’s The Age of Anxiety in The Royal Ballet’s 2018 Bernstein Centenary programme.

Leonard Bernstein had an instinctive sense of rhythm and drew on various influences including jazz, traditional Jewish music and the razzmatazz of Broadway musicals. Consequently, much of Bernstein’s music is ideal for dance; indeed, he is renowned for collaborating with Jerome Robbins on West Side Story.

The centrepiece of The Royal Ballet’s Bernstein Centenary programme is Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett’s The Age of Anxiety, choreographed to Bernstein’s soul-searching Symphony no.2.

Both symphony and ballet are inspired by W.H. Auden’s epic narrative poem The Age of Anxiety, a wordy and philosophical piece penned in response to the disillusionment and uncertainty that endured following the end of WWII.

Scarlett’s bittersweet wartime ballet crisply combines neo-classical steps with jazz dance to portray four solitary drinkers – three men and a woman – in a New York bar. Fuelled by the booze, they share profound observations on the meaning of life.

The ballet received mixed reviews when it premiered in 2014. Still, the consensus was that convincing characterisation and physical chemistry combines with designer John Macfarlane’s lavish sets for an aesthetically pleasing piece.

The upcoming works from Resident Choreographer Wayne McGregor and Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon mark each artist’s first foray into Bernstein.

McGregor’s offering is set to the landmark composer’s Chichester Psalms, with designs by ceramicist Edmund de Waal.

Meanwhile, award-winning fashion designer Erdem Moralioglu is creating the costumes for Wheeldon’s contribution.

This mixed line-up promises to demonstrate the range and danceability of Bernstein’s internationally renowned oeuvre. An evening of diverse ballet awaits!
