Roberta Jean, Brocade, Lilian Baylis Studio

An intriguing dance work inspired by the craft of lace-making, Brocade, comes to the Lilian Baylis Studio at Sadler’s Wells, prior to appearing at the Edinburgh Festival

Robert Jean, Brocade
In creating Brocade the Edinburgh-based choreographer Roberta Jean was responding to modern day notions of craft and physical work.

Employing a cast of female dancers, Brocade is performed on a traverse catwalk, with the Lilian Baylis audience sitting alongside very much as if they were watching a fashion show.

Featuring live music by violinist Angharad Davies, Brocade evolves as something between a procession and a concert, with the dancers skipping and skimming to a rhythmic cadence of beats and jumps.

As alliances form and dissolve, it becomes clear that what is being recreated is the precision, strength and delicacy of a piece of lace.

Of Brocade Roberta Jean says it ‘weaves our diverse skills as threads to make a whole.’

An intriguing proposition and surely enough to pique our curiosity…
