Challenging German theatre-maker Frauke Requardt brings her anarchic take on Mothers to The Place

'Lurid' and 'sensory overload' are terms often used to describe the work of Frauke Requardt. And we suspect they will be lobbed at her new piece too.
In Mothers Requardt draws inspiration from motherhood in all its sublime, chaotic and messy glory. Mothers, grandmothers, godmothers, Earth mothers, mother tongue… all of these and more come together in a relentless work that features giant mushrooms, children’s toys and fluids in the same magical space.
The Place tells us Mothers is 'a dance across sticky surfaces with slippery bodies'. Make of that what you will.
Requardt has been creating highly original dance-theatre for more than a decade. German-born and London-based, she has shown her work internationally and enjoyed residencies in a number of European countries, as well Colombia.
Her intensely theatrical works blend very physical choreography with the spoken word, dark humour and not a little surrealism. Narratives are never linear. Time stops and starts, but from a different point. Confusing? Yes. Exhilarating? Absolutely. Tame? No way!
Mothers sees Requardt dance alongside Neil Callaghan and Jacob Ingram-Dodd, two performers who work at the intersection of theatre and dance, and are Requardt’s regular collaborators.
