Taming of the Shrew, Sadler's Wells

The Stuttgart Ballet returns to Sadler’s Wells for a week this November with two performances that blend the classic and the cutting-edge. Under the leadership of artistic director Reid Anderson, brand new and multifaceted medley Made in Germany is followed by a return to the company’s roots in a revival of founder John Cranko’s 1969 The Taming of the Shrew. The Stuttgart Ballet has a reputation for innovative and unusual dance after fifty years at the frontier of choreographic innovation, and it doesn’t disappoint with Made in Germany: a mixed bill of 12 classical and contemporary pieces show casing the best of, and breadth of, the company’s repertoire. Choreographies by company founder John Cranko sit alongside seven world premieres from resident choreographers Marco Goeke and Demis Volpi, as well as new comers Katarzyna Kozielska and Roman Novitsky.
Cranko’s The Taming of the Shrew brings quick wit and light relief to the latter half of the week.Young British soloist David Moore stars as Lucentio, performing in the wake of his recent nomination for the German FAUST theatre prize for his lead performance in the world premiere of Krabat (March 2013). With a traditional edge, featuring wonderfully ostentatious period costumes and set to the baroque music of Scarlatti,Cranko’s take on one of Shakespeare’s best-loved comedies is quick-paced and light-hearted.
