London dance audiences will be the very first to experience Tomorrow, a new piece from award-winning Australian choreographer Lucy Guerin.
Known for her subversion of traditional movement styles, Guerin creates dance works which are odd, unfamiliar or unsettling. Her commission to create Tomorrow – one of two new works Rambert is premiering this spring - follows a collaboration with theatre director Carrie Cracknell on a current production of Macbeth for the Young Vic.
Tomorrow uses the psychology of the characters in Macbeth as the starting point for an abstract piece based around the themes of ambition, violence and regret.
The programme also features Shobana Jeyasingh’s enigmatic Terra Incognita.
Driven by ideas and images of difference and distance, Terra Incognita reflects upon the yearning for adventure that inspired ancient sea-farers. Drawing on urban legends and ancient cartography, it combines mathematical rhythmic patterns from classical Indian dance with contemporary movement.
This journey of exploration is propelled by composer Gabriel Prokofiev’s dramatic score. His striking soundscape seamlessly guides the ten dancers who traverse the stage.
When Terra Incognita had its world premiere in 2014, it was the first time that Jeyasingh’s work had been shown at London’s Sadler’s Wells in her 27 year career as a dance maker. As it embarks on this return visit, don’t miss the chance to be part of the voyage!
Completing the line-up is a revival of Itzik Galili’s acclaimed A Linha Curva.
A high-octane and witty work for 28 dancers, A Linha Curva is based on pulsating Latin American rhythms and movements.
During this irresistible party piece, Rambert’s dancers are joined onstage by 4 percussionists, ensuring the music that fuels the moves is in the spotlight too.
A confirmed crowd pleaser, the riotous A Linha Curva was last seen in 2010, when it contributed to Rambert’s Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance.
Samba-inspired lines and curves blend with a Brazilian style and contemporary dance technique as Rambert’s dancers strut their way through this tantalising offering from one of Israel’s most talented choreographers.
With a world premiere, a voyage into the unknown and a full-blown party piece, Rambert’s latest triple bill certainly demonstrates its varied repertoire!
