Aakash Odedra Company: Murmur 2.0, The Place
Contemporary dance in London is infused with classical Indian Kathak, as the Aakash Odedra Company brings Murmur to The Place.
The show: It’s often said that dance is a universal language, and a young Aakash Odedra took that literally when words and letters proved unreliable for him. Co-created with Australian choreographer Lewis Major, this is a ‘duet with dyslexia,’ both representing the experience and finding a solution in dance.
The piece ran to general intrigue at the Royal Opera House in early 2015. Odedra’s intricately mapped, spinning movements dance the abandonment of words through a literal hurricane of paper and words, escaping the white silhouettes that dog him across the stage.
The artist: A classical Indian Kathak and Bharat Natyam dancer at origin, Odedra developed his contemporary style under mentor Akram Khan, and has already had works created on him by dance titans Khan, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Russell Maliphant.
