Wendy Houston: Stupid Women, The Place
Wendy Houstoun returns to the home of contemporary dance in London with a witty new take on improvisation.
The artist: Flying in the face of dance’s usual restrictive age policy, quintastic dancemaker Houstoun recently won a Critics Award for Pact with Pointlessness, a eulogy to her departed friend and fellow choreographer, Nigel Charnock.
Having found her niche with the experimental DV8 Physical Theatre, her career has so far encompassed film, installations and theatre. She told the Guardian in 2014, “Really I'd like to be defined by the positive aspect of mixing things up, by the fact that I love movement but I really love language too.”
The show: Working solo more frequently now, Houstoun’s work is bracingly unpredictable, shot through with confessional humour. Stupid Women, billed as ‘organised chaos’, sees Houstoun direct and attempt to manage the wild improvisations of her 5 performers, only to expose the impossibility of repetition, and the heroism of the performer.
