SHAOLIN: Shaolin Monks, Peacock Theatre
Thrill-seeking audiences will be mesmerised by the Shaolin Monks’ Kung Fu feats when they return to the capital for their first solo show in seven years this autumn.
These nimble warriors are back with a brand new show, simply titled Shaolin, for a three-week run at The Peacock Theatre.
The Shaolin Monks are famous Buddhist masters of martial arts who are renowned for their discipline, strength and courage. The ‘dance’ to expect is an amalgamation of acrobatic Kung Fu and spiritual Tai-Chi, executed with fluidity, grace and athleticism.
As highly trained performers, the Monks astound audiences with impressive routines which feature bursts of powerful energy countered by moments of meditative stillness.
Unique and intricately choreographed sequences in Shaolin will see a cast of twenty running, jumping, tumbling, fighting with spears and swords, soaring into spinning aerial kicks and throwing lightning-fast punches. The moves are exhilarating but performed with Zen-like precision, showcasing remarkable flexibility and control.
Every member of the family is guaranteed to be transfixed when the onstage action includes Monks smashing marble slabs with their heads, performing handstands on two fingertips, breaking bricks on their heads, splintering wooden staves against their bodies and throwing themselves into a series of incredible backflips.
The troupe hails from the sacred Shaolin Monastery, the most famous holy temple in China. This ancient place of worship is the birthplace of Shaolin Kung Fu, which is the oldest institutionalised style within Chinese martial arts.
Shaolin will take audiences on an intrepid journey depicting the history, philosophy and story of the Shaolin Monks. They have refined defensive martial arts over fifteen centuries to a rare and spectacular point of perfection. The show will vividly illustrate the agility and miraculous physical endurance these Monks achieve through rigorous training and focused meditative practice.
Shaolin has been devised with the intention to eclipse any previous performances from the Shaolin Monks that audiences have ever witnessed before. Billed as the ultimate display of theatre and physical prowess, it will need to be seen to be believed.
