Anatomy of a Passing Cloud: Royal New Zealand Ballet, Linbury Studio

Royal New Zealand Ballet is renowned for its contemporary work, and this eclectic mixed programme is designed to showcase the dancers at their dynamic best.
On the bill is a premiere by former company member turned dance maker Andrew Simmons. His offering is inspired by New Zealand’s efforts during the First World War, as is Neil Ieremia’s contribution, Passchendaele.
Meanwhile, Greek choreographer Andonis Foniadakis uses choral dancing to explore the contrast between the elevated spirits of heaven and the grounded earth in Selon Désir.
Completing the line-up is Javier de Frutos’s The Anatomy of a Passing Cloud. This is the acclaimed Venezuelan-born choreographer’s love letter to the Pacific, written in dance. Especially created for Royal New Zealand Ballet’s 60^th anniversary in 2013, it draws on Pasifika imagery, culture and rhythms. The result is an intense, colourful and intricate ensemble work which is a vibrant celebration of New Zealand as a unique and joyful nation.
