Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui Milonga¡, Sadler's Wells

We can’t wait for the UK premiere of Milonga, the tango event of the year choreographed by Moroccan-Flemish virtuoso Si di Larbi Cherkaoui.

The piece takes its name and inspiration from the intimate milonga dancing clubs which are a regular fixture of the late night bars of Buenos Aires. Cherkaoui, a frequent collaborator of film director Joe Wright – and most recently responsible for the gorgeous choreographies in Anna Karenina and A Season in the Congo - has given this traditional Argentinian dance style a contemporary twist while holding on to the essential elements of its authenticity.

With the help of the legendary Nelida Rodriguez de Aure, who Cherkaoui himself describes as “the fairy godmother of tango”, Milonga is an exploration of bodily interaction – of a completely physical, wordless mode of interaction where even eye contact is integral to the choreographed whole.

Sparks will fly onstage and there’ll be afeast of spectacularly intricate footwork to feat your eyes on, so try to sit up close. Of the six dancing couples, five are genuine Buenos Aires milongueros, whilst two have a background in contemporary ballet. They’ll be dancing alongside an authentic Argentinian tango band playing new music from Argentinian composer Fernando Marzan and Polish Szymon Brzóska.

Perhaps the boldest cross-cultural piece on the London dance stage this winter, this is an absolute must-see for tango lovers – but it also promises to be a fascinating evening for the uninitiated. And for those who feel inspired to get up and dance along, there is a free post-show dance class for ticket holders on Thursday 7 November .
