Sylvie Guillem & Russell Maliphant in PUSH
The critically-acclaimed Guillem/Maliphant partnership returns to the Coliseum after a sell-out world tour of their unmissable dance programme, PUSH.
London dance audiences are in for a treat, with the return of the extraordinary show PUSH to the London Coliseum.
The multiple award-winning show features international ballet star Sylvie Guillem in works by the one of Britain’s most exciting choreographers, Russell Maliphant. Integral to the staging is lighting by the uniquely talented and innovative designer Michael Hulls.
The evening is made up of four pieces: Two and Solo are dazzling solos performed by Guillem; Push is a duet for Guillem and Maliphant; and Shift is Maliphant’s seminal 1996 solo.
Maliphant’s work draws from a variety of sources, mixing classical ballet with contact improvisation techniques, capoeira, t’ai chi and yoga. In 2006, The New York Times critic, John Rockwell, described PUSH as a ‘meditative, almost hieratic reduction of ballet to its essence’, and the partnering of Maliphant and Guillem as showing ‘magical complicity.”
Lighting designer, Michael Hulls, the winner of this year’s Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance, has collaborated with Maliphant since the 1990s and been instrumental in shaping the unique look of this choreographer’s work. Hull sees light and dance as indivisible and uses chiaroscuro effects to create a sense of heightened awareness.
