Uchenna Dance
As part of the Southbank Centre’s Africa Utopia festival, Vicki Igbokwe, founder and choreographer of Uchenna Dance, will lead an informal workshop and social dance session entitled Our Mighty Groove.

The women of Uchenna Dance will get proceedings underway. Their task is to evoke a sense of the New York underground club scene, and entice spectators of all levels of dance experience, who want to kick back and enjoy themselves, to join in a blend of club styles with a live DJ on hand.

Uchenna Dance Company was established in 2009 to educate and entertain through a diverse offering of dance. Our Mighty Groove social dance reprises Uchenna Dance’s 2016 tour of the same name, which took the form of an immersive-interactive production set within a New York underground nightclub. The audience took the role of both observer and performer, experiencing the individual antics of five female club goers all with contrasting personalities.

Under Vicki Igbokwe’s charismatic leadership, participants will have the opportunity to experiment with her empowering style of house, waacking and vogue, fused with African and contemporary dance.

Although there's no admission fee, reservations are required, so keen social dancers are advised to reserve their tickets early as this lively immersive event is likely to pull quite a crowd.

Africa Utopia is an annual festival celebrating the continent’s varied culture with a range of talks, workshops, music, performances, fashion and food running one 15 and 16 July.
