You have probably attended or watched a fair number of dance shows; and watched or even taken part in cookery events. What is unlikely, though, is that you will have participated in a piece of music/theatre that seamlessly fuses the two apparently so disparate formats.

Well, now you can! Luca Silvestrini's May Contain Food is a remarkable work, one that explores the sensory, cultural and social implications of food; but if that sounds a little on the heavily didactic side, fear not: it is, in fact, highly entertaining and very much tongue in cheek.

Four vocalists and four dancers all sing for their supper, while at home audiences can follow along by preparing and indulging in a tasting menu just like the dining audience in this recording made in 2016 at The Place. From savouring simplicity, to the communal act, to touching on the moral dilemma of vegetarianism, the show weaves through the cultural significance of eating.

Recipes can be as simple or complex as you choose, raging from a cherry tomato and a handful of rice to an aromatic sticky ginger pudding, show composer Orland Gough's own recipe, to bake during the viewing and consume at the end.

Luca Silvestrini is one of the most innovative artists working in dance and theatre in the UK today. His own company, Protein, has been going from strength to strength since its foundation in 1997, using choreography, music and humour to entertain and provoke audiences, and in the process gaining a raft of awards.

He's created some truly memorable shows, most prominent among them his stage adaptation of Saint-Exupéry's The Little Prince, The Place's 2019 Christmas offering, and Border Tales, a daring piece that tackles the issues surrounding multiculturalism head on, with humour and feeling.

For May Contain Food, Silvestrini joined forces with the composer and cookery writer Orlando Gough. Working closely together, they came up with movement that is composed and music choreographed and performed a cappella, resulting in an immersive experience of indulgence, nostalgia and mischief.

The show will be accompanied by an introduction from Luca Silvestrini and Orlando Gough; and on the 12th February, a live chat room will be available for those who wish to converse with the pair over supper.
