GDIF, Bandaloop, Resurgam, St Paul's Cathedral
The façade of St Paul's Cathedral becomes the stage for Resurgam, a breathtaking performance of vertical dancing by the Californian troupe Bandaloop
Resurgam, by the Californian troupe Bandaloop, is sure to be one of the most spectacular events of the Greenwich and Docklands International Festival (GIDF) 2023, and that's saying something, if you bear in mind the variety and originality of the events on offer this year.
Bandaloop specialises in vertical dancing. Imagine a group of people dancing on a flat surface, and then turn the surface a full 90 degrees, so that it's perpendicular to the ground. And now imagine that the performers continue to dance on that surface… Intriguing? Exciting? You bet!
An innovator in vertical performance, Bandaloop seamlessly weaves dynamic physicality, intricate choreography and climbing technology to turn the dance floor on its side. It can perform in an almost limitless variety of open-air settings, from ancient castles to the vastness of the Yosemite National Park in the US, and to date it has performed in over 300 sites in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, the Americas and Asia.
The show that Bandaloop is bringing to the GIDF is to be performed on the façade of St Paul's Cathedral, Christopher Wren's 17th-century masterpiece, and one of London's great landmarks. Artistic director Meleccio Estrella named it Resurgam, meaning 'I shall rise', after an inscription carved onto the south portico of the cathedral, and the piece explores what it takes to be optimistic in challenging times.
All three performances are free. Just turn up and marvel.
