Spoken Movement's award-winning Family Honour is an exploration of family and personal trauma, told through a unique blend of hip-hop and theatre. Originally presented at Sadler's Wells Breaking Convention as a duet, it's now been reworked and enlarged, becoming a full-length ensemble production.

The work of choreographer Kwame Asafo-Adjei, Family Honour pays homage to the traditions that come together in his internationally acclaimed work – hip-hop, contemporary dance and his Ghanaian background – to create a very specific style of movement. This he uses to examine the day-to-day realities he faces in his social surroundings.

In Family Honour a young girl bound by the demands of tradition, religion and family, confronts her past rebellion against these pressures, in what The Guardian described as 'a tensely contained dispute that tells of the repression of young women by older religious men'.

Kwame Asafo-Adjei says he wants the audience to abandon their stance as observers and feel that they are part of the work, so as to have to choose how they respond.

Family Honour is part of Sadler's Wells Well Seasoned programme, which showcases Black dance artists.
