Antarctica: The First Dance

Antarctica: The First Dance is an absolute first: a dance work performed and filmed on the world’s last great frozen wilderness.

Inspired by the beauty and fragility of ice and snow structures, it was choreographed and directed by New Zealander Corey Baker and is performed by Madeleine Graham of the Royal New Zealand Ballet.

Antarctica: The First Dance was performed and filmed on Antarctica over 12 days last February in temperatures ranging from -2.4 to -16 C.


This is not just a gimmick. Behind the combination of artistic endeavour and endurance there is a serious purpose: to bring world class dance to international audiences while highlighting the dangers of climate change and the need to preserve our Earth for future generations.

The film was co-commissioned by Random Acts for Channel 4, and digital development agency The Space supported by the BBC and Arts Council, England, and will be available to watch on TV as from 11 am on www.channel4.com/programmes/random-acts/
