Proms in the Park, Hyde Park

The 20th Proms in the Park is where the BBC Proms season lets its hair down with a full day of pop, show and classical music given equal billing. And while Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons are top of the bill at Britain’s largest outdoor classical music event, some of the other turns are pretty starry too.

Sir James Galway, the man with the golden flute, whose virtuoso playing has inspired generations of flautists, appears in a programme that lasts all afternoon and evening. Also waving the flag for classical music is the brilliant Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez.

Proms in the Park was dreamed up 20 years ago, as a solution to the insatiable demand for tickets to the Last Night of the Proms, and as a way of involving artists outside the classical world in the summer celebration of live music-making. This year, Richard Balcombe conducts the BBC Concert Orchestra and Royal Choral Society.

Michael Ball and Anneka Rice present the day-long event which culminates in a great national sing-along with a live link-up to the Royal Albert Hall, and other Proms in the Park events nationwide, for the traditional choruses of the Last Night of the Proms, including "Land of Hope and Glory" and "Jerusalem".

Pop-wise, there's a chance to get all nostalgic for 90s girl band All Saints - whose new album 'Red Flag' comes out this year - and 00s band The Feeling. The a real blast from the past, however, will be provided by 80s icon Rick Astley. The 'Never Gonna Give You Up' singer has just turned 50 and celebrated with a new album called 50 (naturally), his first album in a decade.

For something more contemporary - and for a guaranteed good time - catch comedian and singer (and actor and director) Tim Minchin. He'll be joined by some of the cast of his unbeatable musical Matilda.
