Paul Lewis: Bach, Beethoven, Liszt, Mussorgsky, Royal Festival Hall

Paul Lewis is one of the finest and most sought after concert pianists of his generation. He is best known for his recordings of Beethoven Sonatas, so it’s hard to see why you wouldn’t beat a path to this concert’s door.

This performance sees him playing two Beethoven Sonatas Op. 27, both subtitled Quasi una fantasia (like a fantasy), including the much-loved Moonlight Sonata . He will also be playing a selection of lesser-known, shorter pieces by Liszt and Bach, followed by Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition , which is a true showpiece for virtuoso pianists.

Lewis, who has three Gramophone awards to his name, studied under the Austrian piano legend Alfred Brendel. Like Brendel, Lewis’s playing style is full and rich, and if you like a big romantic sound on the piano, you will enjoy hearing him play. He also puts a lot of emotion into his music, making for a truly unique and personal performance.
