Reflections on World War I: Elgar and Vaughan Williams, Sam Wanamaker Playhouse

As the centenary year of the beginning of World War I comes to an end, this concert brings together two pieces which bookend the conflict, written by two composers who would be greatly affected by the events. The Globe's candlelit Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is the perfect backdrop for this poignant look at British music of the past.

Often overlooked in the composer’s oeuvre, Vaughan Williams’ Phantasy Quintet was written on the brink of World War One. It is puzzling that the work is so little performed: it is a veritable gem. Although the ensemble may be small, the musical gestures are large in scope, lending this piece a certain gravitas.
