Ian Bostridge & Julius Drake: Schubert's Lieder, Wigmore Hall

Tenor Ian Bostridge and pianist Julius Drake will continue their acclaimed Schubert Lieder series this September.

Although Schubert was only 31 when he died, he produced an astounding number of Lieder , German poems set to music, during his short life. Tenor Ian Bostridge and pianist Julius Drake bring a selection of twenty-two of them to Wigmore Hall, continuing their acclaimed series launched in the 2012-2013 season. Ranging from much-loved favourites to lesser-known miniatures, this is an unmissable opportunity to delve into the oeuvre of this quintessential Romantic figure.

The Lieder

From the composer’s joyful paean to the natural world, ‘Der Einsame’ to the restless desolation of ‘Der Wanderer an den Mond’, the programme explores a wide range of topics and emotions, underlining Schubert’s reputation as a composer of great humanity and intuition. The evening will include settings of texts by the esteemed Johann Mayrhofer – a close friend of Schubert’s, and second only to Goethe in the number of texts set by the composer – and Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart, best known as the poet of ‘Die Forelle’ (or ‘The Trout’, famously set by Schubert in 1817).

Bostridge and Drake

Bostridge is one of the outstanding tenors of our time - earning widespread praise for his intelligent and nuanced performances, he is currently at the top of his game in art song and opera. His crystalline tones have earned him praise in repertoire from Britten to Dowland, but the singer has had a special affinity for Schubert throughout his career. Renowned for his perceptive accompaniment, Julius Drake makes a perfect partner. Don’t miss out on the chance to hear this thoughtful singer in some of the most exquisitely crafted songs of the nineteenth century.
