Marking 150 years since the birth of composer Sergei Rachmaninov, a concert that also features Britten, Stravinsky and Debussy

Two anniversaries coincide with the continuing celebrations for the Brodsky Quartet's 50 years of making music in a radical way, and the 150th anniversary of the birth of Russia's great composer Sergei Rachmaninov.
Players and composers alike have a fresh way at approaching music, and of course the programme in the year-long Sound Unwrapped series includes some Rachmaninov.

Two of the original members of the Brodsky's are still playing with the ensemble: founding cellist Jacqueline Thomas and violinist Ian Belton. They are joined by viola-player Paul Cassidy, and an exciting recent addition: violinist Krysia Osostowicz. It is Cassidy who has arranged for the quartet the ravishing Vocalise by Rachmaninov, which is sure to be in audience's heads for days to come...
Over the years the Brodskys have worked across musical barriers with artists including Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello and Björk. They took a new look at their appearance too, commissioning concert wear from Issey Miyake.
Their concert at Kings Place opens with Stravinsky and includes two works by Rachmaninov, plus Britten's String Quartet No 1 and Debussy's String Quartet. Programming works that resonate and contrast is a strength of the ensemble, and this promises to be a really memorable evening's music.
