Sound Frontiers, Southbank Centre

Once upon a time it was called the Third Programme, then it became Radio 3, and for 70 years the classical music station at the BBC has not only been broadcasting live and recorded music, but constantly generating musical events, bringing on rising artists, and putting the top names in music within the reach of listeners all over the world.

To celebrate its big birthday, the station gets out of the studio and on to the concourse of the Southbank Centre for two weeks from 23 September, with a glass pop-up studio and events round the clock both inside and outside the centre's normal live music spaces.

Highlights in the Royal Festival Hall include two concerts given by the Philharmonia Orchestra under the Finnish conductor and composer Esa-Pekka Salonen, on 25 and 29 September, and featuring all-Stravinsky programmes on the theme of Myths. Click here for more information and to book.

On 23 September violinist Nicola Benedetti joins the London Philharmonic Orchestra in a concert conducted by Vladimir Juroswki that includes two dazzling Szymanowski violin concertos and Debussy's reverie, L'Après-midi d'un faune. Click here more information and to book.

But if music makes you want to move, rather than sit quietly, among the many off-beat activities in the two-week event are yoga classes taken outside the Royal Festival Hall to the accompanying music of the Keats String Quartet.
