In this cross-disciplinary event, Aurora Orchestra and Poet in the City examine the transformative relationship between technology and memory. How have our relationships with music and poetry shifted as a result?
Through electrically-charged poetry and music, Memento challenges audience members to consider what happens when matter, music, and language are placed under pressure. Composer Martin Suckling and poet Francis Leviston have both created captivating new works inspired by new technology and the fabled memories of artistic giants Franz Schubert and Emily Dickinson.
Suckling pressurizes music through unique cadences achieved by echoing and distorting fragments of Schubert’s String Quintet. Leviston, in contrast, revitalizes Dickinson's poetry with her musings on how the writer would have responded to recent technological advancements.
Their works will be performed in tandem; complete with a performance of Schubert’s String Quintet, readings of Dickinson’s works, and reflections from physicist Stuart Parkin, one of the leading scientists working to develop memorable technology.
