All Eyez on Me
Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez on Me seeks to tell the story of one of rap's biggest legends
Whether it's Kendrick Lamar's conflict with Fox News, Childish Gambino's shift to BLM-oriented funk, or just Drake's appropriation Jamaican Dance Hall, the last few years have been the most politically significant era for rap since the 1990s. It's timely, then, that there is a biopic of hallowed hip-hop saint Tupac Shakur coming out.
Shakur is a touchstone and influence for anyone interested or involved in the genre, but All Eyez on Me (also the name of Shakur's 1996 album) should hold interest for people who aren't aficionados or even fans. The personal conflict for Shakur between the appeal of material success and the responsibility of being a 'black leader' couldn't be more pertinent to current tensions in the US, and – aside from the political resonances – his story is a fascinating one that should lend itself well to cinema.
