The Hustle: Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson scam their way to the top
It’s a new dawn for women in cinema. From Ocean’s 8 to Ghostbusters, there seems to be a trend in Hollywood of taking films with all-male protagonists and revitalising them with female-powered casts. The latest of these is Chris Addison’s The Hustle, a gender-flipped remake of Frank Oz’s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988).
Steve Martin and Michael Caine are replaced by Pitch Perfect star Rebel Wilson and Serenity’s Anne Hathaway who instead take their on-screen revenge on Dirty Rotten Men.
The film preserves the original comedic concept of bringing together two con-artists-in-arms from vastly different backgrounds. Wilson’s character is a small-time scammer who ups her game after chancing upon the svelte and elegant Hathaway, who plays a sophisticated charlatan accomplished in the art of seduction – and martial arts. After sufficient botched-up knife-throwing practice, acting lessons and makeover scenes, the two make it their mission to bamboozle a tech billionaire out of his fortune.
British comedian Addison makes his feature directorial debut with The Hustle having already appeared in BBC series The Thick of It and directed episodes of HBO’s Emmy award-winning Veep. Wilson and Hathaway have also already proved their comedic mettle – so there's reason to hope that this rambunctious ‘fake it ‘till you make it’ plot will have cinema-goers in stitches this summer.
