The Assistant: Julia Garner in first deliberate #MeToo film

Many contemporary movies have been dubbed "#MeToo films" simply because they see a young woman being treated badly. But in many cases, these stories were written long before and are being reappraised in an entirely accidental context.

Kitty Green's sophomore feature The Assistant might be the first film to deliberately tackle the specificities of workplace toxicity in the film industry. Julia Garner stars as Jane, an overworked and underpaid assistant who faces immense pressures on one specific day in the office.

Garner most recently starred in an episode of Amazon anthology series Modern Love, based on the New York Times column, and leads the film here. Most other characters matter little, but Succession's Matthew Macfayden (no longer Mr Darcy) co-stars in a crucial scene.

The Assistant first played at Sundance to rave reviews, before earning further praise at the Berlin Film Festival. It's a quiet film, made greater for its attacking context and long overdue condemnation of injustices in the industry.
