Summer Film Nights with Electric Pedals, Southbank Centre
Southbank Centre is teaming up with Electric Pedals for four outdoor film screenings with a twist: power up the bikes along the river to watch Chicago, Moulin Rouge! and more
There's no shortage of outdoor screenings to choose from in London, but how often do you get to feel like you've really earned the payoff of a glitzy and dramatic romance, how many times have you worked to deserve to sing along to your favourite musicals?
For their season of Summer Film Nights, Southbank Centre has teamed up with Electric Pedals to give moviegoers a unique experience that asks for effort in return for rewards: hop on a bike, pedal away, and power the screening of your choosing.
The attractive freedom of Electric Pedals is that you can choose to just sit back with popcorn and let the others do the work for you, if you were so inclined. But where would be the fun in that?
For four balmy nights this summer, Summer Film Nights is offering an interactive film-watching experience by the river to add an active spin to your cinema trip. Head to Topolski for pizza and prosecco beforehand, or take a chance on Oh My Dog! for fancier fast food.
And best of all? Every Summer Film Nights screening is free.
Little Shop of Horrors, 24 July
Audrey II is unlike any plant you should ever meet...
Love a child and it'll love you back, but feed an alarmingly lively plant and... who knows what it'll do. The spritely and creepy musical with the toe-tapping songbook kicks off Summer Film Nights, with enough dangerous entertainment to power every next pedal pusher full of adrenaline.
Chicago, 31 July
No number of men could keep Roxie Hart down
Renée Zellweger makes her mark as a musical tour-de-force in Rob Marshall's seminal showstopper. Ahead of her newest transformation as Judy Garland later this year, get on your bikes to root for the actress in much earlier days as the passionate and precarious Roxie Hart.
Moulin Rouge!, 14 August
Nicole Kidman? Check. Ewan McGregor? Check. Bicycles and brilliant romance? Check and double check.
The crucial saying of Moulin Rouge! (originating in Nat King Cole's 'Nature Boy') goes: 'the greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return'. Love your bike and the screen will love you back: limber up for an emotional rollercoaster with stars in its eyes and a song in its heart for the dazzling Moulin Rouge!. The timelessness of this earnest love story makes for a loud, proud screening best experienced with all-in immersion.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show, 21 August
Take a trip to Transylvania with Tim Curry's Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Interactivity has always played a crucial part in screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Audiences are encouraged to dress up and engage with props to bring key moments to life – throw some rice at the wedding, spray rain and take shelter, find use in a piece of toast. Perhaps by taking on a pedalling mission you might be exempt from these activities while pursuing your own – but no one is spared in the lively experience watching one of the most rambunctious musicals that ever did grace our screens.
