Fashion in Film Festival 2017
The tenth anniversary Fashion in Film Festival is entitled Wearing Time: Past, Present, Future, Dream – and is a great excuse to screen Barbarella
Kim Novak in Vertigo, Hitchcock's masterpiece at Fashion on Film
Venues as diverse as the Barbican, Curzon cinemas, Central Saint Martins and The Hoxton are hosting events for the tenth year of the Fashion in Film Festival. Screenings and talks – divided into past, present and future themes – look at everything from costume dramas (Dressing History talk, 18 March) – to space chic (Barbarella, 25 March). Here are some of our picks:
On 16 March at Picturehouse Central, near Piccadilly, catch a screening of Daphne du Maurier's ghost story, Don't Look Now, directed by Nicholas Roeg in 1973 and set mostly in Venice. Fashion might not be the first thing that comes to mind in this haunting thriller, but look again: the motif of a child's Red Riding Hood-scarlet cape dominates the film, and the lives of the couple in it, grieving for their drowned girl.
'Meet the most beautiful creature of the future' – on 25 March the Barbican screens Barbarella, the extraordinary 1960s space romp starring Jane Fonda as a sex-crazed intergalactic agent. Preposterous costumes abound; it's a visual feast for those with a camp sexual appetite. The trailer (above) gives you some idea of this cult classic.
The 1958 Hitchcock gem Vertigo – a subtle, erotic and exceptionally stylish masterpiece in which fashion is central – has James Stewart trying to re-create his lost love, with an obliging Kim Novak caught up in a dangerous web of desires and dreams. Curzon Soho, 18 March.
