To celebrate the life of the late Harold Ramis, who died in February, Leicester Square’s Prince Charles Cinema has scheduled a special double bill of the writer/director’s greatest work – Groundhog Day and... Groundhog Day.

Yep, watch Bill Murray living the same day again and again and again – again and again.

On the outset Groundhog Day looks like a conventional Hollywood romantic comedy: down-and-out protagonist, out-of-the-ordinary setting, Andie McDowell. But it’s more than that, a modern-day It ’s A Wonderful Life, and it’s been seen as a treatise on self-improvement, of life, God, death, purgatory, existentialism, banality, and is reportedly a favourite among Buddhists. And film's title, of course, coined its own phrase.

That's forgetting the film's also incredibly funny, with Bill Murray at the height of his powers, and Ramis delicately balances the darker themes - Murray attempts suicide in one scene - with knockabout comedy.

Ramis is otherwise best known for playing Dr Egon Spendler in Ghostbusters, which he wrote with Dan Aykroyd, one of six collaborations Ramis made with Murray. Famously falling out after Groundhog Day, they reportedly reconciled just before the director's death on 24 February.
