Nanni Moretti's Mia Madre film, 2015 Cannes Palme D'Or Nominee is a tender portrait of love and loss.

Previous Palme D’Or winner Nanni Moretti is back with a touching new drama of love and loss, Mia Madre. Set in Rome, the film follows divorcée film director Margherita (Margherita Buy) who struggles to give her elderly mother (Guilia Lazzarini), teenage daughter (Beatrice Mancini) and spoiled leading actor (John Turturro) the attention they all so desperately clamour for.
As Margherita shoots for her newest film she and the crew run into a series of frustrating hiccups, not least for their actor's inability to remember his lines, and she struggles to compartmentalise her increasingly fractious life. As her mother's condition worsens, life slowly starts to unravel and she struggles to keep her emotions under control.
Brimming with wonderfully meta-cinematic touches that rival François Truffaut’s in Day for Night, Moretti's new film is warm and entertaining, and will be deeply moving for anyone who's ever sat by the hospital bedside of a loved one. Heartbreaking yet witty and incisive, and refreshing to see an older female protagonist taking the lead, this is Moretti at his best plus a wonderfully nuanced performance from Margherita Buy.
