L’Eclisse, 1962 film by Italian director, writer, and editor Michelango Antonioni, has been digitally remastered for re-release – just over 50 years after it first came out, in 1962.
StudioCanal’s digital restoration looks to bring Antonioni’s great modernist work of black-and-white cinema into a new level of visual beauty. The Cannes Jury Prize-winner paints a brooding portrait of a young woman’s isolation in a city, shot with slow grace in beautiful black and white, and has now been improved by modern digital techniques.

The plot, which deals on the surface with the feelings of a young woman (Monica Vitti) as she is in between an old lover and a new one, expands into an exploration of isolation amid Rome’s modern and classical architecture.

The Eclipse, Antonioni’s ambitious exploration of character, crucially at the expense of action, remains as unusual now as it was at its initial release. We're looking forward to this contemplative, existential masterpiece being reinvigorated on London's silver screen. 
The film will be on at BFI Southbank from 28 August – 10 September.
