With director Guy Ritchie at the helm, the Cold-War ‘spy-fi’ has all the hallmarks of its director: a refined London swagger dripping with style and sex, beautiful backdrops and eye-watering action set-pieces. Fresh from the hugely successful reboot of Sherlock Holmes, Ritchie knows how to handle an action heavy period-drama, and early reports suggest The Man from U.N.C.L.E. will be just as spectacular.

Set against the backdrop of an early ‘60s Europe – swinging, sexy, but tense in the midst of Cold War – The Man from U.N.C.L.E. centres on U.N.C.L.E. agents Napoleon Solo, played by Henry Cavill (Superman) and Illya Kuryakin, played by Armie Hammer (The Social Network).
Film plot
Initially at loggerheads (and causing mayhem in beautiful Italian cities with car chases aplenty), the two then join forces to stop a mysterious Global crime network intent on destabilising the fragile balance of power.
To prevent the threatened proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology, they take their lead from the daughter of a vanished German scientist – played by now fully-risen star Alicia VIkander (Ex Machina, Testament of Youth, Son of a Gun) – and must race against time to reach her and save the world from nuclear catastrophe.

Ritchie's film is a visual delight, each frame manicured and dripping with ‘60s style. Henry Cavill is brilliant as the wise-cracking Solo, perfectly suited in tailored Italian finery and equipped with sharp one-liners, taking what we're sure is a welcome break from his taciturn, muscular heroism as Superman in the Man of Steel franchise.
Hugh Grant makes an appearance
Armie Hammer excels as the Russian agent, whilst in every scene, Vikander is artful and refined and provides welcome respite in this adrenaline pumped blockbuster. Hugh Grant graces the film with a delicious cameo, reminding audiences he is still the master of that particular British bashful charm.
A blockbuster with brawn
This stylish, witty rollercoaster through the Cold War years looks to be a perfect antidote to the recent intellectualisation of the blockbuster genre. Laugh and be amazed by the spectacular set-piece action sequences, all without having to think too much: the perfect viewing for a lazy August bank holiday.
