Jonah Hill and James Franco, New Movie 'True Story'
London movie listings to include a change for comedy duo Jonah Hill and James Franco. New movie True Story is a dark, real-life thriller.
James Franco, Jonah Hill: Michael Finkel True Story
A far cry from those bromance Jonah Hill and James Franco movies we've grown used to – fans of stoner comedy lament, for your poster boys have gone all serious. Of all the new movies in London this summer, this is one to watch.
The pair now take turns in candour and deceit in new film True Story by Rupert Goold, based on the book True Story: Murder, Memoir, Mea Culpa, by Michael Finkel, journalist – now memoirist.
The book is an account of the relationship between disgraced Michael Finkel and Christian Longo, a man accused of murdering his own family.
The film follows Finkel (Hill), fired by the New York Times for fabrication on a cover story, in conversation with Christian Longo (Franco), standing trial for the brutal murder of his wife and two daughters. Of special interest to Finkel was that Longo stole his identity, suggesting he was the journalist when apprehended by police.
As their relationship builds across a series of interviews, so does their trust, but Finkel’s redemption of candour is complicated by Longo’s changing story and his psychopathic manipulation of the journalist and those closest to him.
Sundance Festival 2015
The knotty, undulating thriller premiered at Sundance and is the first cinematic outing of Goold, lauded for his work at the Almeida Theatre in Islington.
This epistemological thriller grips with its subtlety, with Hill, Franco and Felicity Jones (as Finkel’s wife) each turning in marvellously underplayed performances. The force of the film comes from our shared journey with Finkel, experiencing the twists and turns of opinion towards Longo that drives at the very heart of how we know things.
True Story will be released in London cinemas from 24th July. Click the link below to see other movies in London cinema now as well as London movie listings, outdoor venues, seasons and more.
