New film about autism
Autism has long been a popular subject for the silver screen: from Dustin Hoffman’s much renowned performance in Rain Man (1988) to Sean Penn’s heart-wrenching display in I am Sam (2001) and Leonardo Di Caprio’s memorable ‘Arnie’ in What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), to name but a few, the condition seems to stir the human consciousness like no other. Now, documentary director Morgan Matthews, a five-time TV BAFTA nominee, brings us the aptly titled X+Y film, his new film about autism and first feature, inspired by Morgan Matthews' documentary, Beautiful Young Minds, nominated for a BAFTA in 2007.
X+Y: film cast
Written by James Graham (author of the acclaimed National Theatre play This House) there's a fair bit of talent behind X+Y. Asa Butterfield (Hugo, Ender’s Game) stars alongside Rafe Spall (Life of Pi, Prometheus) and Oscar-nominated Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine, Happy Go Lucky). Morgan Matthews' X+Y film about maths genius Nathan has, among other things, a great deal of heart. The film focuses on a boy with characteristics of mild autism, Nathan Ellis (Butterfield). Ellis struggles to connect with people, including his mother Julie (played by Hawkins), but finds solace in mathematics and and numbers. Under the mentoring of Martin Humphreys (Spall), an acerbic but caring teacher with Multiple Sclerosis, Nathan gains a place in the highly revered International Mathematics Olympiad, a life changing process not only for himself, but also for his mother.
X+Y: film review
What sets Morgan Matthews' film X+Y apart from many others on the subject is his emphasis on ‘the spectrum.’ One boy in his Beautiful Young Minds documentary takes issue with the idea that when people think of autistic people ‘they think of things like Rain Man,’ pointing out instead that ‘there are lots of different symptoms associated with the term and everybody has their own position on the spectrum.’
Shot by Danny Cohen (Les Miserables) and scored by Martin Phipps (The Honourable Woman, Brighton Rock), this looks set to be an upbeat but sensitive take on a difficult subject which simultaneously explores those timeless themes of human connection and love.
