007 Retrospective, Prince Charles Cinema
A series of James Bond film screenings leads up to the new bond film UK release date, Spectre, in August: head to the James Bond season at the Prince Charles Cinema.
Spies have never been so detectable, after last week's release of comedy caper Kingsman: The Secret Service and the intermittent coded news bulletins regarding Daniel Craig's return as a certain Queen-serving womanizer. To help wait out the year before Sam Mendes's eagerly anticipated Spectre hits our screens, we've found a little something to whet our (shaken) Martini-starved appetites.
The Prince Charles Cinema, the West End's last independent film venue, prides itself on an eclectic range of cult events, from sing-a-long Rocky Horror Show screenings to fan-dictated seasons. Keeping up with current inclinations for espionage, this year they're playing host to a 007 Retrospective, a feat described as their 'most epic and ambitious yet'. And indeed, they've acquired the full roster, from Sean Connery's first foxy incarnation in Terence Young's Dr. No to Sam Mendes' triumphant Skyfall starring rough and ready Daniel Craig.
Surprisingly this marks the first ever full sequence of James Bond films London, and indeed the world, has seen, due to the difficulty in securing the rights to each film. Whilst attendance to the all twenty-three screenings is certainly not compulsory, the retrospective offers a rare chance to witness Bond's multiple silver-screen metamorphoses. Cinephiles are invited to compare early Roger Moore in Live And Let Die (screening on March 1st) with Pierce Brosnan's performance in the classic Goldeneye (May 17th).
Thought Javier Bardem's turn as psychotic Raoul Silva was creepy? Why not re-visit quintessential Bond-villain Jaws, played by 7-ft Richard Kiel in The Spy Who Loved Me on March 15th, or decide which Bond girl comes wins in the stakes for best double-entendre. Goldfinger's sassy 'Pussy Galore' played by Honor Blackman, or Famke Janssen's frankly terrifying 'Xenia Onatopp' in Goldeneye?
Each Bond film is a kind of litmus paper for its time, shifting in tone accordingly and reflecting oft hilarious (we're looking at you, costume department) contemporary trends. Whilst there's never too many times to watch your favorite 007 strut his stuff on the big screen, we'd also recommend using this opportunity to catch a Bond less known.
The 007 Retrospective is running until June 28th at the Prince Charles Cinema.
