The Nomad Cinema's Valentine's Day Screenings
London's favourite pop up cinema is back, screening a selection of cult favourites and not-so-classic romances – just in time for the dreaded Valentine's day.
Wondering where to watch classic movies in London? There's no better way to spend a winter evening than enjoying your favorite films on the big screen. Enter The Nomad Cinema, one of the most original and best pop up cinemas in London, organising screenings of classic films and cult movies – London has an abundance of interesting venues to watch films, and the Nomad has certainly made the most of them, inviting you to explore the capital's hidden gems.
From cult classics to rom-coms...with an edge
The best part of the experience is that every penny of the profits is donated to The Sustainability Institute, an environmental and educational charity based in South Africa. Bestowing the gift of space to Nomad events are a wide range of exciting venues; from Middle Temple Gardens to our personal favourite, Grosvenor Square (which happens to be on Culture Whisper's doorstep), there's an eclectic offering of places to watch old films in London. Get ready for one of the most exciting cinema experiences London has to offer.
On January 25th, cool cinemas in East London are getting a few degrees cooler, as the program kicks off with the Coen brothers' suitably frosty noir Fargo presented at the Hoxton Hotel. This cult classic remains a game-changer for the detective genre, thanks to Frances McDormand's star turn as pregnant chief of police Marge Gunderson.
Then, as Valentines day makes its approach, Nomad will be screening the marvellous black comedy and one of the best 'odd-couple' pairings in cinema history, Harold and Maude. Friday 13th of February sees the cult classic come to Hyde Park's LookOut, to kick off this romantic time of year in understated style. The classic film is a hoot for even the most stringent of existentialists, who might just recognize themselves in Bud Cort's death-obsessed Harold.
Here's to you, Mrs Robinson
Also being screened that evening at The LookOut is the late, great Mike Nichols' classic The Graduate. From its wistful tracking by Simon and Garfunkel to Dustin Hoffman's career-defining performance as bumbling ingénue Benjamin Braddock, there are infinite excuses to re-live everybody's favorite coming-of-age satire on the big screen.
Have a gander with everyone's favourite Gosling
Closing the program is another double-bill – with two options fit for the date – and probably, yours. This Valentine's Day, permission is given to celebrate all things Ryan Gosling. For the traditionalist there's romantic weeper The Notebook, and for fans with a more art-house sensibility, there's Nicholas Winding Refn's poster-perfect Drive, a thriller seeping LA cool. For alternative things to do on Valentines day in London, then, head to Hyde Park and kick back in a relaxing, pressure-free environment. With pop up food vendors serving tasty snacks and refreshments – all of which are included in the ticket price – this has to be our pick of things to do Valentines day. London may be taking a turn for the chilly, then but things are definitely looking up – head to the Nomad's website for booking and more information.
