Aiming to make the world's masterpieces accessible to the masses, Exhibitions on Screen brings the biggest art exhibitions from galleries around the world to local cinemas in London and around the world.
The 2015 series begins with Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, which has returned home to The Hague's historic Mauritshuis Gallery after an impressive two-year world tour, where huge crowds gathered to catch a glimpse of the stunning and enigmatic painting – with almost 1.2 million people visiting the exhibition during its stopover in Japan.
The documentary follows Johannes Vermeer's seminal painting as it garners global attention and seeks to explore the questions that surround the enigmatic piece, often referred to as 'The Dutch Mona Lisa'. Shot in stunning high definition, the film goes behind the scenes, taking the recently renovated museum as its starting point and exploring the other intriguing masterpieces that are housed within the gallery's walls.
The series has already brought Matisse, from Tate Modern and MoMa and Rembrandt from the National Gallery and Rijksmuseum to UK screens, and has now released three beautifully shot documentaries on DVD – Manet: Portraying Life; Vermeer and Music: The Art of Love and Leisure and Munch, 150.
Exhibitions on Screen also has a number of upcoming releases: next in the series is Vincent van Gogh – A New Way of Seeing, which gives viewers exclusive access to the Vincent Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, and invites them to explore the dramatic story of 'the man behind the masterpieces' – beginning on the 14th of April.
Following this, they'll be showing The Impressionists, from the Musée du Luxembourg, the National Gallery and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The film explores a comprehensive series of works by the likes of Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Degas and Pissarro, and invites viewers to uncover the story of these great revolutionaries. The Impressionists will hit UK screens on the 26th May, 2015.
The screenings are a great opportunity to become better acquainted with these revolutionary and seminal artists, whose lasting influence changed the face of the artistic world. Click here to view showtimes and to book.
