Josie Long – ‘Let’s Go Adventure’ Film Tour

Stand-up comedy prodigy Josie Long hosts a one-off evening of comedy filmic fun at the Lexi Cinema, Kensal Green, this Thursday. Let’s Go Adventure is a screening of two BAFTA Scotland award-nominated shorts she wrote and starred in last year, with a live introduction and post-screening Q&A with Long herself and director Doug King. It’s the latest London stop in their month-long tour of independent cinemas throughout the country.

Long is one of the biggest movers and shakers in the Alternative Comedy Revival of recent years, and a passionate feminist idealist recently dubbed by the Evening Standard as ‘London’s Lena Dunham’. She won the BBC New Comedy Award when she was just 17 and carries the enviable pedigree of starting her career supporting influential stand-up comedy tone-setter Stewart Lee. If you’re a Radio 4 listener you might well recognise her as the presenter of October 2013’s Short Cuts mini-documentary series, and numerous other shows besides.

The films, made in Glasgow last year and brought to fruition through Sponsume crowdfunding, present two chapters in the tragicomic story of a young woman chasing and flinching from the idea of spreading her wings. In Let’s Go Swimming, Josie leaves her life in London for streets paved with opportunity in Glasgow – only to have her expectations confounded. In Romance and Adventure, itchy-footed Josie and her eternally un-go-getting friend Darren struggle with the reality of friends getting married, pregnant, older and ‘more boring’.

In Long’s own words: “Making these films was the best time of my life ever... We’ve had the same talented crew for both films and we’re just at the beginning of our working life together.” With a feature film script already in the works, to be edited by Channel 4's  Peep Show writer Jesse Armstrong, this partnership looks to be the start of something pretty special. This is a one-off chance to see these two shorts in one sitting, so make sure you don’t miss out!
