The Term – Opposing Putin and Q&A
Defending democracy against Vladimir Putin: documentary The Term takes a closer look at those trying to topple the Russian President's.
The name Vladmir Putin inspires opprobrium the world over. Since being elected President for the third term in 2012, his actions – on democratic liberties, LGBT rights and Ukraine – have galvanized protest both within and without the Russian Federation. London’s TVF Media and the Frontline Club present a new documentary that cuts into the heart of Putin’s reign.
The Term (2014) provides an unprecedented insight into Russia’s anti-Putin movement. Key opposition figures open up on their beliefs, including Putin’s socialite god-daughter Ksenia Sobchak, liberal democratic politician Ilya Yashin and anti-corruption presidential candidate Aleksei Navalny. Footage from meetings and rallies reveal the depth of enmity towards the country’s compromised democracy. This is both a passionate broadside for human rights and freedom, and a considered look at Putin’s burgeoning cult of personality.
Three significant Russian directors helm the feature. Alexey Pivovarov, is a television journalist and documentary-maker known for his insistence on honest coverage of the protest movement. Frequent collaborators Alexander Rastorguev and Pavel Kostomarov have won awards for their first-rate cinematography and attention to social issues. Together, these three filmmakers have created the most thorough exploration of Putin’s Russia to date. A Skype Q&A with producer Max Tuula will follow the screening.
