Misbehaviour: Keira Knightley, Gugu Mbatha-Raw's pageant comedy

In 1970, Jennifer Hosten from Grenada made history, when she became the first black competitor to win the title of Miss World. In 2020, a fictionalised version of this story is coming to the big screen, focusing on the women who tried to bring the whole structure down.

Keira Knightley and Jessie Buckley star as two protestors boycotting the pageants, decrying the sheer concept of making women be attributed worth based on their looks alone. At the same time, Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays Hosten, in the middle of a pageant that historically never paid attention to people who look like her.

Comedies rewriting history and reviving a crucial conversation about women's rights and equality have multiplied in the past few years – but that's no bad thing.

Buckley starred in Wild Rose as a free spirit with a song in her heart, while Knightley played a whistleblower in Official Secrets. There are always more stories to be platformed – and if it can be done with a spring in its step, even better.
