UK's first documentary cinema shines a light on The Lives of Others around the world in this compelling series of films
The Lives of Others, Bertha DocHouse Documentary Festival 2016
The Lives of Others: Tales from the Four Corners of the Earth will showcase five visually enterprising documentaries from across the globe, in both subject and origin. Each film, from Tunisia to Columbia will tell a unique story which will encourage us all to reflect on our own lives.
Bertha DocHouse was the first Documentary Cinema in the UK. Located in Bloomsbury, it aims to shine a light on people and communities found across the expansive vista of our world. This documentary season is produced in partnership with the Royal Anthropological Institute and its accompanying RAI Film Festival.

Nueva Venecia
Wednesday 9th November 4.10pm, Sunday 13th November 4.10pm
In this insightful documentary from Uruguay, Emiliano Mazza de Luca explores the fishing community of Nueva Venecia, a village perched above Colombia's Lake Tota, from homes and schools to a soccer field. In the face of rising sea levels and the threat of devastation of their livelihoods, this film depicts the lives of the citizens who live in the village.
What Tomorrow Brings
Sunday 6th November 4.10pm, Saturday 12th November 4.10pm
In this film, Beth Murphy explores a year in the life of the first all-girls school in a conservative Afghan village, where girls have never before been educated. This documentary will explore the hopes and dreams of the young women educated at the school, and will provide an insight into the lives, fears and aspirations of those who live in the village, teach and learn inside the school's walls.
Nowhere to Call Home
Friday 4th November 6.30pm, Monday 14th November 6.30pm
Here we follow Zanta, a Tibetan farmer's widow as she flees from her village and crosses the border into the slums of Beijing, as she escapes the clutches of her defiant father-in-law. In Beijing, we are presented with a China rife with anti-Tibetan sentiment and a journalist faced with the ethical choice of whether to get involved with a family dispute. The film explores the human impact of the China-Tibet political strife. Directed by Jocelyn Ford.
Ukrainian Sheriffs
Saturday 5th November 4.10pm, Friday 11th November 6.30pm
In this film from Roman Bondarchuk, we are welcomed into the turbulent village of Stara Zburyevka, where local sheriffs Viktor and Volodya attempt to keep the peace between drunken neighbours and rival farms. This tragicomic documentary insightfully portrays a sleepy backwater village in Ukraine where rising tensions with Russia are put to the back of the queue of importance.
A Revolution in Four Seasons
Monday 7th November 6.30pm, Wednesday 16th November 4.10pm
Jessie Deeter directed this exploration of what modern Islamic woman is. In Tunisia's post-revolution years, we follow two very different young women on their paths to forging two juxtaposed visions of the country's future.
