By this point, the news of yet another Disney live-action remake is more exhausting than anything – but when the task befalls animals as well as humans, wicked curiosity can only increase. With Jon Favreau's The Lion King still cooling off from last year, the next animalistic adaptation is hot on its heels as two pups are looking for love once more.
Animator Charlie Bean is direction a new version of Lady and the Tramp, from a script penned by Andrew Bujalski – he of Computer Chess and Support the Girls. Story details are still scant, which could suggest a very close reimagining (as was The Lion King), but the plot could still thicken.
In terms of the film's key players, the two darling dogs will be voiced by Tessa Thompson (Men in Black: International, Thor: Ragnarok, Sorry to Bother You) as Lady, and Justin Theroux (The Leftovers, On the Basis of Sex, Maniac) as the Tramp. The pair are joined by Sam Elliot, Janelle Monáe, Thomas Mann, Ashley Jensen and Benedict Wong.
Where Favreau's film prided itself on photorealistic animation to bring the characters to life, it remains to be seen whether Bean's cast of dogs will roam freely, with voiceovers floating in and out, or whether CGI will do some heavy lifting to animate mouths and faces in motion. It's worth pointing out that these aren't just imaginary furballs – the canine cast is fully composed of rescue dogs, who all found 'forever homes' after the production wrapped.
Lady and the Tramp is now streaming worldwide, but while this isn't the first live-action remake, it's the first to test out new release methods – instead of seeing a global theatrical rollout, the film will be available exclusively on Disney+, Walt Disney's brand new streaming platform.
