Despicable Me 3

Despicable Me has returned for its third round: add Steve Carell in a dual role, and that can only equal success, right?

The 80’s meets villainy in Despicable Me 3
After a temporary sojourn away with prequel movie Minions, the Despicable Me franchise welcomes us back into the Gru family. But we're not the only ones: joining audience members and Gru alike is an unexpected sixth presence in the form of Gru's long lost identical twin — you guessed it — Dru.

Well, they’re almost identical. Both brothers are voiced by Steve Carell, but Dru is the blonder, bouncier, altogether more flamboyant version — think Prince Charming from the Shrek movies, only a little less English. Thanks to a lifetime of wickedness, he’s also filthy rich, and on hand to coax Gru away from reformed domestic bliss and back into the villain-mobile for one more heist.

Once properly attired in contrasting cat-suits, the pair are out to beat Gru’s nemesis, a washed up child actor turned mega-villain by the name of Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker). Being from the 80’s and all, Bratt comes complete with shoulder pads and flares. His first weapon? A lethal keytar canon, spewing out weaponised disco riffs.

While kids find themselves transfixed by the plot that unfolds, the audience’s older members can enjoy a nostalgia trip to the tune of Michael Jackson, Madonna, Van Halen, or a-ha. 80’s classics will be joined by a selection of new boppers by Pharell Williams, pulled out of that roomy brown hat especially.

In its third incarnation, Despicable Me has everything we loved before — plus a little more retro, a little more sub-plot, and twice as much Carell.
