The Craft of Film, Barbican Centre
This Barbican film event celebrates the work of Europe's leading filmmakers
Anyone who wants to delve a little deeper into the
filmmaking process should look into ‘The Craft of Film’ at the Barbican, where
some of the industries most celebrated practitioners will talk about their
work.
Part of Film in Focus, a series of projects and events that celebrate the medium of film, ‘The Craft of Film’ is a series of talks by some of Europe’s leading directors, editors, cinematographers, designers, and others. Each talk will be accompanied by a screening of the film under discussion, with particular focus on the speaker’s involvement in that film.
We’re most looking forward to the talk by Yorgos Mavropsaradis, editor of Dogtooth (2009, dir. Yorgos Lanthimos). Mavropsaradis also worked on Lanthimos’ excellent The Lobster, which was one of the best films of 2015, but Dogtooth is even better, and its editor will have doubtless have interesting things to say about such a stylistically singular movie.
We also recommend the talks by the production designer of Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia (Jette Lehmann), the lead actress of Graduation director Cristian Mungiu’s 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days (Anamaria Marinca), and the cinematographer for Béla Tarr’s The Turin Horse (Fred Kelemen).
