El Camino: Breaking Bad returns in Netflix film

It's been over 10 years since Breaking Bad first aired on AMC. The story of Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a high school chemistry teacher turned meth lord after a cancer diagnosis, unfolded over five seasons which culminated in one of the best and darkest finales in TV history.

Capitalising on the show's timeless success, creator Vince Gilligan confirmed that a film project is being made. And now, sources at Variety have announced that it's been picked up by Netflix and serves as a sequel to the original series – with Aaron Paul returning as Jesse Pinkman.

Those involved in the production have been tight-lipped about what exactly it's about, but with the arrival of a teaser trailer featuring Skinny Pete, the prospect of returning to the drug-fuelled underground of Albuquerque is closer than ever.

What's the story of the Breaking Bad movie?

The movie will follow Jesse in his quest for freedom after the harrowing series finale. Vince Gilligan is coming back to write and direct.

The teaser trailer depicts Jesse's long-time friend Skinny Pete in an interrogation room, who adamantly denies any knowledge of his friend's whereabouts. 'Even if I did [know], I wouldn't tell you,' he says under the intensive glares of the surrounding detectives and police officers. Jesse himself is absent from the first glimpses of the film, but it suggests that the film will reveal what exactly Jesse Pinkman has been up to since he departed in the eponymous truck.

But news of the movie being a sequel is worrying. The end of Breaking Bad was declared one of the best TV endings of all time, and it's difficult to think how it could be improved on. But at least Gilligan is heavily involved in the project, which might put Breaking Bad purists at ease.

Who's in the cast for the Breaking Bad movie?

Aside from Aaron Paul, few returning or new cast members have been announced. But thanks to the chilling new trailer, we now know Charles Baker returns as Skinny Pete, and Matt Jones comes back Badger. Gilligan hasn't let slip who else is set to appear in the film, but actor RJ Mitte has confirmed he's not part of the project – so we know Walt Jr won't crop up.

Bryan Cranston is probably waiting for the call, but his involvement is unlikely considering how Breaking Bad concluded. But maybe Walter White will come back? Bob Odenkirk was the one who revealed that filming was already finished, so perhaps Jesse will reunite with the beloved shady lawyer Saul Goodman once more?
