Painted Hall ceiling tours, Old Royal Naval College, August-September 2018
Don't miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get up close to 'Britain's Sistine Chapel'
The Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College – also known as 'Britain's Sistine Chapel' – has one of the most breathtaking baroque interiors in Europe, and the largest painted ceiling in the UK. Decorated by British artist Sir James Thornhill, designed by Christopher Wren and founded by Mary II, The Painted Hall is the Old Royal Naval College’s pride and joy.
It is also 60 feet above the visitors’ heads. Or, at least, it was until an observation deck was installed recently. For a limited time only, the public can participate in guided tours and view this spectacular painted ceiling up close for the first time.
Angela McConville, Chief Executive of the Old Royal Naval College, said: 'The experience of being within inches of this inspiring masterpiece is incredible and not to be missed. This truly is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and something that all lovers of art, architecture, history and culture should experience.'
The observation deck has been installed during a period of conservation, allowing visitors to enjoy the ceiling while conservation work is undertaken on the ceiling. During the tour, you'll discover all the stories, histories and symbolism bound up in this grand 18th-century celebration of Britain’s maritime power. Guided tours of 'Britain's Sistine Chapel' have never been offered before, and with the final tour taking place on 30 September, this really is your last chance to get up close and personal with one of Britain’s finest heritage sites.
The full reopening of the Painted Hall will take place in Spring 2019, and will include a new visitor centre, interpretation gallery and cafe, as well as the 40,000 square feet of cleaned and revived painted surfaces.
