To celebrate London Craft Week, the country's best perfumers have created bespoke fragrances for an exhibition at Mayfair's Beaumont Hotel

London Craft Week Perfume Exhibition, The Beaumont Hotel
The saturation of mass-market scents means that many people are turning to the independent perfume houses that are keeping the craft of perfume-making alive.

To celebrate the third edition of London Craft Week, Mayfair’s Beaumont Hotel has asked some of Britain’s finest perfumers to create bespoke scents for their Jimmy Beaumont Perfume Collection, which will be on display in the hotel's Art Deco lobby in the exhibition Rebels and Rogues: Creating Bespoke Perfumes. Each perfumer has created olfactory delights inspired by a collection of Hollywood stars, literary glitterati, 1920s roués and colourful socialites.

It is a little-known fact that Britain is home to one of the oldest independent family perfumers in the world. Floris, appointed Perfumer To The Queen founded in 1730, has designed a perfume inspired by 1930s speakeasy owner Texas Guinan. Penhaligon, who can boast the privilege of having been perfumer to Queen Victoria, also joins the exhibition with a perfume inspired by socialite and magazine editor Lady Loelia Lindsay.

Newer niche perfumers will also showcase their fragrances including Tom Daxon, who founded his brand after a childhood spent accompanying his mother on work trips to the world's perfume capital, Grasse. Ormonde Jayne channels debauched revelry in a fragrance inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald's character Jay Gatsby, with a cologne that evokes 'obsession and infatuation, as well as power and cool detachment'. 4160 Tuesdays, an independent micro perfumery, has also created a perfume inspired by Mexican and American actress Dolores del Rio with a fragrance called Drive Them Wild, named after the devastating effect that the starlet had on men.

If you're looking for a scent that will lend you a dash of that old school glamour, some of these perfumes will be available for purchase. With a host of heritage brands and new independent perfumers to discover, the exhibition will certainly cast a spotlight on the thriving British perfume scene.
